The Course Covers:Where to buy timber, the moisture content and character of the woods. The course will be visiting saw mills and timber kilning, to give an insight and understanding for purchasing the timber for the project. Also a visit to Axminster power tools to give some tips on purchasing hand tools, products, and machinery.
The showroom has samples of furniture from the top 35 leading cabinet makers.
The course will study the quality and workmanship in the current industry. The course will be looking at the construction and finishes of these companies to give you a very hands on experience.
Timber Preparation:
Learning to use woodworking machinery in a clean & safe environment covering heath & safety, and setting up of the workshop machinery. A thorough understanding to minimise the risks are essential for safe machining.
Converting timber from waney edge boards to finish planking i.e. cutting off wany boards, straight edging surface planing, thicknessing ready for construction and carcassingCarcassing:
Mortice and tenons, doweling biscuit jointing, rebating, machine cut dovetailing, table routing, hand held routering, and hand cut dovetails.
Construction:
Sash cramping, glue construction i.e. Casermite glues, pva glues, animal glues, where and when not to use it. Board shooting, i. e table tops, etc.
Finishing:
Machine, portable and hand sanding
Polishing:
Spraying, water based and cellucose/AC lacquers, hand finishing, staining, French polishing, sanding sealer, hand waxing, oiling, etc.
Sources of Supply;
Guidance is offered on the source of supply of wood, veneers, stains, polish, lacquers, hardware, tools, machines.
Conclusion:Candidates will cover some of the above through their own project from making a piece of furniture from start to finish in a workshop environment
